Richard Greer: Kestrel
For oboe and piano. Computer typeset score (14p) saved as pdf for immediate download.
Kestrel's are easily identified by their unique (and impressive) hunting strategy, giving rise to it's Old English name 'Windhover'. Recent research ('Steady as they hover: kinematics of kestrel wing and tail morphing during hovering flights') involving wind tunnels and motion tracking cameras has revealed just how remarkable the birds technique is. While adjusting for changes in wind speed/gusts, turbulance and sheer, the little falcon maintains it's head position in space with remarkable precision.
This musicial work, short and focused, tries to capture the feel and imagery of the Kestrel's hovering behavior; the music suspends itself/hovers; harmonically, gesturally, rhythmically.
Fun fact: in Scotland, (and rest of the UK) there is only one Kestrel species, and so the name Kestrel refers solely to the common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus).
Kestrel was written for oboeist Serol Yapici.
Performance Notes:
The work should be light, energetic and expressive.
