General tips

  • Remember that brass play best as a section.
  • Using one trumpet to play several parts and mixing them together will not work as well as an ensemble.
  • The mic is best placed between four to six feet from the bell, in front of the horn.
  • Be aware that any other mics in the room are likely to pick up brass instruments because they are loud.
  • It is important to use your ears and reposition the mic if you are unhappy with the recordings.
  • Best results are achieved from groups of players that play together on a regular basis.
