A white room features works ranging from those inspired by folksong - Judith Weir's Arise, arise! you slumbering sleepers, based on an American melody, or David Knotts' Coyote Star Song - to the romanticism of Elena Firsova's Frozen Time, the simplicity of Howard Skempton's meditative La gora di mulino (The Mill-pond) or Philip Cashian's atmospheric music for the night sky, and the eclecticism of Gerald Barry's snow is white (which commemorates a 17th-century scientific experiment by Francis Bacon). The title work, Piers Hellawell's a white room, is a rapid scherzo evoking "the idea of an uncluttered space".
