Ronald Stevenson's Passacaglia on DSCH was presented to Schostakovich on a festival visit to Edinburgh. A passacaglia of ten minutes or more is considered a large one, but Stevenson's work is an unprecedented and majestic eighty minutes in length. With four notes as a canvas. an extraordinary world picture is created in which visions of Africa, Russia, Scots Pibroch and virtually all of the western forms are paid homage to. The great fugue in the third part has three subjects; DSCH; the BACH (B flat, A, C, B); and the Dies Irae. The combination of the first two is a symbol of peace between the Russian and German nations and all mankind. The latter theme represents an in memoriam for the six million Jews who were murdered by Nazi Germany. A truly momentus work well worth taking the time to get to know.
This double CD also features Stevenson's Prelude Fugue and Fantasy, inspired by Busoni's opera Doktor Faust, and Recitative and Air. All performed by Robert Stevenson himself.
