Thomas Erskine, Earl of Kelly 1753 - 1781

Artists | Classical | Composers and Arrangers

Born in Fife. Studied composition and violin at Mannheim under Stamitz. Returned to Scotland and lived in Edinburgh where he became involved in the Edinburgh Musical Society. He introduced the Mannheim symphonic style to Britain and was well respected for his symphonies and overtures, particularly Overture to the Maid of the Mill. The Earl of Kelly was also a keen socialiser and a member of the Edinburgh Capercaillie Club where his fondness for drinking liquor led to the saying `his ruddy countenance would ripen cucumbers'!
