Now considered a leading authority on Early Scottish Music, he was senior lecturer at Glasgow University for many years, retiring in 1997 to concentrate on preparing for publication his many editions, arrangements and recordings of early Scottish music. He has written a book, Music of Scotland 1500-1700, contributed editions to Musica Britannica and articles to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and appeared as a continuo player with many orchestras and individuals. More recently (with Glasgow University) he has launched a new series of scholarly editions of Early Scottish Music, Musica Scotica.
