Born Wakefield. Studied at the University of Oxford (an MA in Classics and later a doctorate in Music), with further study with Petrassi in Rome and as Gregory Fellow in Music at the University of Leeds. From 1956 he taught at Edinburgh University, and in 1970 was appointed to the Reid Chair of Music. His compositions include two symphonies, eight concertos for various solo instruments, an important output of church music and a wide variety of chamber, and instrumental and vocal works. His three-act opera Columba was premiered in 1981.
