The composer disclosed this month that he is writing a comic opera about the MPs' expenses scandal, which may feature duck houses and moats.

The musician spoke at the St Magnus Festival in Orkney, where he lambasted Gordon Brown for "wrecking" classical music education in schools and praised newspapers for "doing for democracy what the Government had failed to do".

He believes: "The arts need champions to help nourish the nation, not political wreckers. The St Magnus Festival gives young musicians and composers a chance, it works with schools etc, which is more than can be said of much of this government's policy in musical education.”
