The St Magnus Festival in Orkney has grown from small beginnings into one of the country’s most highly regarded and adventurous arts events; with everything from groundbreaking theatre to classic movies and adults-only Moulin Rouge-style shows on offer, it was easy to see why.

This year’s programme suited all tastes, with world-class performances running alongside community events performed slickly by enthusiastic amateurs. Among the visiting ensembles who took part this year were two of Scotland’s national performing companies – the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, making its festival debut, and the National Theatre of Scotland, with its large-scale community theatre project Transform Orkney.

Co-director of Transform Orkney, Davey Anderson said: “Orcadian life has a bold artistic streak running right through it, and it has been a real privilege to collaborate.”
