On Sunday 19th and Monday 20th August, Berklee College of Music will present the acclaimed clarinet-violin-piano ensemble, the Zodiac Trio, in a unique new music program, titled Indie Classical on the renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Indie Classical will unveil four new compositions by Berklee faculty members Andrew List, Scottish Music Centre member Margaret McAllister, Larry Bell and Francine Trester, offering the works their European Premiere. In addition, the unique program will present two works by composers living in Glasgow, Scottish Music Centre members Eddie McGuire and Graham Hair. Reflecting the multi-genre musical world of Berklee, the goal is to fuel cultural exchange between the two countries in the field of not only classical music but also roots music, jazz, latin, pop etc. With the goal of furthering Berklee’s presence on the international stage, the Zodiac Trio will also perform a work by Berklee composition student Andrew Bukowski, winner of a “call for score" competition held by the ensemble at the school as part of its annual residency in February.

The first concert on Sunday 19th August will be held at the historic venue, Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh. The Zodiac Trio will repeat the program on Monday 20th August at the City Halls, Glasgow. The Sunday concert is part of a collaboration in a three part series at Cannongate Kirk with Scottish performing groups, The Whistlebinkies (Friday 24th August at 6pm) and the Harmony Ensemble ( Saturday 25th August at 7:30pm).

The project’s organizer, Berklee professor of composition Dr. Margaret McAllister states: The long term objectives are to create an annual presence for Berklee faculty, students and affiliated artists at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the worlds largest arts festival, and to foster connections of creativity with British musicians and artists for the purpose of exchange and to enhance Berklee’s international profile.

The Zodiac Trio’s association with Berklee began in 2010 upon an invitation from composition faculty member Andrew List, and has evolved into an annual week long residency held in February, titled the Boston New Music Project. The residency is comprised of concerts by the ensemble, student composer reading, workshops and clinics, and is concentrated on music by living American composers.
