Edinburgh born Sam Hutchings studied Music at Christ Church, Oxford before gaining a Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. During his time at the Academy, he won several prizes and was asked by Malcolm Martineau to become a Staff Pianist at the Oxenfoord International Summer School.
As Rehearsal Pianist for both the RSNO Chorus and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, he worked with many distinguished conductors as well as with singers such as Sir Thomas Allen, Jane Irwin and Toby Spence. He also worked on productions at the Edinburgh International Festival, including as Musical Director of 'guerrilla opera' Love in a Library, as well as with Cryptic. He performed regularly throughout Scotland on the Live Music Now and Music in Hospitals programmes.
As well as his remarkable sensitivity as a musician and fantastic technique, Sam will be remembered for his patience and quiet humour during rehearsals.
Sam’s commemoration will be held at The Hub (Castlehill, Edinburgh, EH1 2NE) on Friday 13th of July at 3pm. Following this there will be an afternoon tea.
For all those who wish to sing, there will be the opportunity to join in performing the opening movement of Brahms’ German Requiem. Copies of the music will be available, or people may wish to bring their own.
