The BBC Performing Arts Fund has announced that it will be awarding up to £450,000 in grants to the music sector in 2012 via two brand new schemes - Music Fellowships and Community Music.

The Performing Arts Fund is a BBC charity committed to developing new performing arts talent from across the UK and is funded through revenue from the voting lines of BBC One entertainment programmes. Nearly £3.8 million in grants has already been awarded via the Fund in the past nine years. BBC One’s new Saturday night talent show The Voice will be raising money for the BBC Performing Arts Fund through phone voting.

Launching in May, the Community Music scheme will award grants of up to £5,000 to grassroots music groups from across the UK, helping them to carry out training, attract new audiences, encourage new members and raise their profile in their community. Grants of up to £10,000 will be awarded to groups wishing to commission new music.

The Music Fellowships scheme will open for applications in August and is designed to support individuals through the early stages of their music careers, helping them to establish themselves in the professional world through bespoke placements within existing music organisations.

Dorothy Wilson, Chair of the BBC Performing Arts Fund says: Music has been part of the BBC Performing Arts Fund since it was formed out of Fame Academy. We will continue that support by investing in community groups such as choirs, bands and orchestras as well as nurturing new talent across the UK.

Caroline Thomson, BBC Chief Operating Officer says: I’m delighted that the BBC will continue to support the valuable work carried out by the BBC Performing Arts Fund through The Voice. The Voice will be supporting exciting new music talent as the Fund has been doing for many years.
