Field Recording Workshop: How to Capture Sounds and Ways to Make Use of Them
Scottish Music Centre, Glasgow
Fri 1 April 2pm-5pm; 7.30pm-9pm.
Admission free.

With hand-held sound recording equipment becoming more affordable and more easily available, making field recordings is more popular than ever. Whether you want to keep a personal record of people and places dear to you, document disappearing and emerging soundscapes or make use of a rich palette of 'found' sounds in musical compositions, installations or performances, this workshop is for you.

The workshop will be led by Ian Rawes (UK Sound Map, London Sound Survey), with the assistance of Tim Nunn (theatre maker and artist) and Tim Cooper (composer and sound designer).

The workshop is in two parts and you may attend one or the other or both.

A. Afternoon training session (2pm-5pm). An introduction to the practicalities of field recording. It will provide information on microphones and recorders, editing software, and offer advice on improving sound quality. Participants will get a chance to make their own recordings, edit the results and upload them to one of the growing number of audio sharing networks such as Audioboo and SoundCloud.

Designed for: beginners who are thinking about, or just starting, making field recordings.

Other information: A limited number of recording devices will be available to borrow on the day, but if you can bring your own please let us know.

B. Evening presentation and discussion forum (7.30pm to 9pm). After an audio-visual presentation by the workshop leaders, participants will be invited to ask questions and discuss some of the issues they raise.

Designed for: anyone interested in field recording, from beginners to more experienced practitioners who are looking for opportunities to share their work and discuss some of the broader issues.
