This piece was commissioned by cellist Louise Paterson and was first performed by her on 9 March 1999. The title means "elements" in Finnish and it comprises seven sections of contrasting character bound together by aspects of melody and rhythm. The melody is drawn from six hexachords whose intervallic similarities and differences are highlighted. The note order is determined by the use of a change ringing system.
