Commissioned for the RNCM Manchester International Cello Festival 1996, Duel explores aspects of conflict and competition using elements of pitch, rhythm and virtuosity. The instruments are in turn locked in conflict, breaking away, competingt, imitating and pursing. Just for fun - the theme on which Duel is based is taken from Prokoviev's Romeo and Juliet, thereby combining, in honour of this year's Festival, the Russian, the Italian and the English, as well as the idea of armed combat.
