These poems, and their musical settings, were commissioned by Beryl Calver-Jones particularly for the Kings Singers, and she also requested that they should have a connection to the Forest of Dean, where she lives. Her admiration of the Kings Singers goes back to their inception in the sixties.
Like Beryl, I have long been a fan of the Kings Singers; my parents had several of their records when I was a child. Their particular sound and finesse always appealed to me, and it has been a real privilege to write for them. David Pownall seemed a clear choice for the words – we have worked together on several projects in the past, and he has recently moved to the Forest of Dean himself. It is an ancient place of beauty, mystery and surprises, and we have tried to convey this in the language of the songs.
