A Cage of Doves by Sally Beamish BBC Symphony Orchestra London, Garry Walker, Sally Beamish The BBC Symphony Orchestra's London premiere of Sally Beamish's A Cage of Doves will be broadcast on Radio 3, conducted by Garry Walker. (approximate time 16.05 BMT) This ten-minute work is dedicated to Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, who will be 80 next year. A Cage of Doves is inspired by the Orcadian George Mackay Brown’s poetic and innovative novel, Magnus. The music refers to the Northern light which pervades Mackay Brown’s writing. Throughout the piece, fragments of the ancient ‘Hymn to St Magnus’ are heard, and the theme of conflict and resolution is expressed through a series of seascapes. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01qlc7d You’ll be able to stream it live at the time anywhere in the world, and listen for 7 days after the broadcast in the UK.
