The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment takes centre- stage in the Cultural Olympiad celebrations, with the world premiere of Spinal Chords by Sally Beamish. Commissioned as part of New Music 20×12, the piece is set to a text by Melanie Reid, who broke her neck and back during a horse-riding accident in 2010. Melanie has since been writing an inspirational account of her life as a columnist for The Times newspaper and the piece reflects the positivity of Melanie and the immense spirit of the Paralympian movement. The rest of the programme continues the Olympic theme with references to the Movement's home country, Greece and the coming together of nations. Pre-concert: Sally Beamish and Chi-chi Nwanoku in discussion abut the new work at 6:30pm.

The Fidelio Trio
Crawford Logan, Darragh Morgan, Robin Michael, Mary Dullea

The Tolbooth, Jail Wynd, Stirling, FK8 1DE - £10/£8
01786 27 4000

An exclusive performance of Sally Beamish's mesmerising setting of the Anglo-Saxon poem The Seafarer performed by the Fidelio Trio with narration by Scottish actor Crawford Logan and projections by Jila Peacock. Afterwards Beamish will join the performers on stage to talk about her work and offer insights for the audience. The concert ends with Ravel's sumptuous Piano Trio in A minor. A work inspired by his native Basque country, it combines the composer's mastery of composition with his palate of intoxicating colour. The “virtuosic Fidelio Trio” (as described in the Sunday Times) performs extremely diverse repertoire internationally and features London-based Irish musicians Darragh Morgan (violin), Mary Dullea (piano), and Scottish cellist Robin Michael.

Elias Quartet

Cadogan Hall, 5 Sloane Terrace, London, SW1X 9DQ

The Elias are no strangers to Scotland and indeed their second violin player Donald Grant, an equally celebrated folk fiddler, hails from Roy Bridge. Donald's traditional playing was partly the inspiration behind the composition of this quartet, much of which was composed on the Isle of Harris.
