Programme Note

Cinderella was commissioned by the English Serenata with funds made available by West Midlands Arts, and was given its first performance at the 1990 Solihull Festival.

Scored for speaker, wind quintet and piano (with the musicians doubling on various percussion instruments), Cinderella takes the form of a burlesque based on Roald Dahl’s hilarious treatment of the story in his collection of Revolting Rhymes. The musicians not only provide a suitable backdrop to the events as they unfold, but also contribute verbally, musically, and visually to the narration. The main characters in the tale are represented musically by leitmotifs which appear in different guises, hence the ugly sisters have an unpleasant sounding theme, whilst Cinderella’s melody is suitably saccharine.
