Programme Note
Originally written in 1999 for Piano Quartet (the unusual combination of 4 pianists at 2 pianos), this orchestration was made a couple of years later at the suggeston of Richard Deering, a member of the London Piano Quartet which commissioned the work, who felt that its colouristic effects would suit an orchestral palette. The Scottish word'blether' is a suitably onomatopoeic term meaning `to talk fluent garrulous nonsense', and this short piece attempts to do just that with an energetic rhythmic drive and a variety of musical banter.
