There are four contrasting quick and slow sections, closely integrated by thematic and harmonic relationships. The second, resembling a slow 'siciliana', is introduced by the cellos. The third constitutes the heart of the work, with much energetically contrapuntal development. A short oboe solo leads to the final section.
