A Musical Work for Adults with Cochlear Implants
Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Glasgow, Scotland
February 14, 2008
MED-EL has announced the world premiere of 'Noise Carriers', a new musical work by Oliver Searle, which will be performed at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) in Glasgow on St. Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2008 at 7:30 pm. 'Noise Carriers' is a world first, a musical composition aimed at adults with cochlear implants.
Oliver Searle is a highly regarded composer with an ongoing interest in developing music that meets the listening needs of adults with cochlear implants. In recognition of Oliver’s commitment to this area of great need, and his unique talent, MED-EL made him their first Composition Fellow, and are very proud to premiere this new work.
While many adults with cochlear implants have excellent speech understanding, many are unhappy with the sound of music. Some cochlear implant users, however, report that they continue to get much pleasure from music. MED-EL would like more cochlear implanted users to once again enjoy the gift of music, and this work is designed to move them closer to that goal.
What will you hear at this performance?
Oliver has taken a number of Scots songs and tunes, and set them in a musical collage that takes into account what we know about music perception with cochlear implants. 'Noise Carriers' will include some of the songs of Robert Burns, the great Scottish bard, and the work will be performed by an ensemble of students from the RSAMD. The instruments will include saxophones, trombones, double bass, accordion, and drums, and the clarsach, the Scottish harp.
This is a special performance for an invited audience. If you are interested in coming along, please email Oliver Searle.
