Edinburgh-based composer and Scottish Music Centre member [b]Lyell Creswell's[/b] [i]Piano Concerto[/i], written for a close friend, is by turns melancholic, angry, and contemplative, while [b]Jack Body's[/b] [i]Little Elegies[/i] was composed in response to the horrors of war. [b]Liza Lim's[/b] work has been acclaimed for its vibrancy and colour and the orchestra gives the UK Premiere of one of her new works while [b]Helen Bowater's[/b] [i]New Year Fanfare[/i] re-captures a raucous Hogmanay in Java. Expect vibrancy, energy and some exotic instrumentation as the countries' composers fuse European, Pacific and Asian influences to stunning effect under the direction of the young Dutch conductor [b]Otto Tausk[/b]. Five:15 Kate Valentine, Alexander Grove, Wajahat Khan (Sarod), William Purefoy, Nicholas Garrett, Peter Van Huille, Paul Keohone, Lise Christensen The Hub, Edinburgh - £15 0131 473 2000 Five:15 is five new fifteen-minute chamber operas produced through collaborations between some of the leading lights working in Scotland’s vibrant creative industry. Each of the contributors has a particular passion for opera, though many of them are new to creating it. Scottish Opera is committed to commissioning new work. These new pieces offer the creative teams a chance to explore the artform in a 21st century context and present their short operas in an informal and intimate environment. Each opera will have its own unique musical and thematic identity and we are sure that each audience member will have their own particular favourite. Five:15 takes Scottish Opera for the first time to Glasgow’s Òran Mór and The Hub in Edinburgh, venues that are well known for their passion for championing innovation in the arts.
