Mono-phonic, poly-phonic. The same pitch, different rhythms: or, the same rhythm, diferent pitches? four instruments play alternately in rhythmic unity and in counterpoint, borrowing each other's notes and/or rhythms to do so. Outbreaks of unison pitches for all four appear from time to time. The ensemble plays tutti throughout.
