A musical instrument is comlete in itself: but when it enters an orchestra it becomes a fragment of a larger enterprise. Tis iece considers the main fragments of an orchestra - woodwind, brass, strings. Beginning separately, these compare notes, combine, collide, overlap, nterrupt and infrct one another; all the time doing their best to keep their own individuality.
The shape of the piece reflects this fragmentary instrumentation, made up of very short units of just one bar which multiply and expand unpredictably.
