Programme Note
This short six minute piece aims to celebrate the spirit of youth and enthusiasm whcih is a feature of youth orchestra performances. The slow introduction is constructed from simple scales and arpeggios, the basic materials from which all the young players start. Here they are a stylised version of the sort of fragments which can be heard in the band room as the players warm up. The main "allegro" section starts vigorously and then builds from quiet scale passages, starting low in the double basses, to a fanfare-like conclusion inspired by the open fifth tuning of stringed instruments. Etude is dedicated to Richard Chester and The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.
