This lugubrious piece is a transcription of a passage from the 2nd act of my opera in which a psychiatrist describes the effects of untreated depression : "not just failure to engage, but pain." He's not feeling too great himself, having just had a heated discussion with his colleague. The feeling is one of misery accompanied by a stoical determination to keep going no matter what : a good description of amateur musical performance perhaps?
