Programme Note
Beside 'Pange Lingua' for viola and piano, 'Dinosaur' stands as the second in a triptych of works based on the Lenten plainsong Pange Lingua ("Sing Out the Conflict, O My Tongue'). The work is a deconstruction of an earlier choral piece 'Sweetest Wood' which uses the plainsong as its source material. 'Dinosaur's relationship to the gregorian chant is therefore that of second cousin. In my mind, 'Dinosaur' outlines perfectly the shape of a Brachiosaurus. The work is dedicated to the American Bassoonist, David Sogg. The third work in the triptych, for piano, viola and bassoon, is due to be completed by 2010.
