Born in Ayrshire. Studied Music at Edinburgh University and composition (with John Casken) at Durham University. After a spell of lecturing at Manchester University, he returned to Scotland, settling in Glasgow, where he teaches part-time at the RSAMD. He also enjoys a close relationship with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia. A BBC commission, The Confession of Isobel Gowdie, premiered at the London Proms in 1990, brought him international recognition. Recnet works include a percussion concerto Veni Veni Emmanuel (1992), Seven Last Words for chorus and strings (1994), and InZ's de Castro - a commission for Scottish Opera or performance at the Edinburgh Festival in 1996.

Born Ayrshire 1959. One of today's most successful living composers. From September 2000, composer/conductor of the BBC Philharmonic. Conducting activities have included the Philharmonia, SCO, RSNO, BBC Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, BBC SSO, Ulster Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Paragon Ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble, Barcelona 216, Queensland Symphony and Trondheim Symphony.
