John Thomson (1805 - 1841) 1805 - 1841

Born in Roxburgh, his father was a clergyman. After hearing Thomson's Trio, Mendelsohnn was so empressed that he wrote the would be composer a letter of introduction to study music at Leizpig. Whilst in Europe, developed his compositional style and became good friends with Mendelsohnn, and also Schumann. In 1839, he returned to Scotland, and was elected Reid Professor of Music, for Edinburgh University. His compositions were often choral and included 3 stage works; The House of Aspen (1829), Hermann/The Broken Spear (1834), and The Shadow on the Wall (1835).
