Francis Collinson 1898 - 1985

Born Edinburgh. Studied with his father, Dr T H Collinson, organist of St Mary's Cathedral and with Donald Tovey at Edinburgh University. Worked in London as a conductor of musical comedy and researched and presented British folk music for the BBC. Composed incidental music, musical comedy, and a Ballad Opera (The Dark-Eyed Sailor) for radio. Author of several books on orchetration for the theatre and on Scotland's traditional music, and had a keen interest in the work of Walter Scott. He was a founder member of the School of Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University (1951) and lived in Peeblesshire.
