Hamish MacCunn 1868 - 1916

Born Greenock. Studied at the Royal College of Music and remained in London for the rest of his life. He studied composition with Stanford and Parry. He is best known for his overture, The Land of the Mountain and the Flood (1887), but as well as other overtures on Scottish themes, he wrote two operas, Jeanie Deans (1894) based on Scott’s novel Heart of Midlothian (recently revived by Opera West) and Diarmid (1897) based on celtic legends. He also composed a number of cantatas, including The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1888) and over a hundred songs. A disc of orchestral works and operatic excerpts has been recorded by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
