This Musical Theatre summer school is an intensive 10-day course for young people aged 15-17 years old who are interested in exploring how to create musical theatre material. Students will work together in a challenging creative process which will culminate in a musical theatre performance at the end of the course.

Musical theatre is a competitive and demanding industry. Artists have to combine multiple performance disciplines including acting, singing and dance.

With the guidance of the course leaders, students will explore a stimulus using pop music and musical theatre repertoire and create your own alternative interpretations of well-known material. As an ensemble, you will research and interpret text, melody and personal ideas to develop original pieces.

This course may be useful for anyone wishing to pursue a pathway to further training or explore a career in this field. The course will use practical exercises to develop the skills necessary to perform musical theatre material including acting through song, character development, dance and movement work, singing skills and stylistic choice.

The course will culminate in a sharing of the work created by the group for friends and family on the final day of the summer school in the Royal Conservatoire.

By the end of the course, students will have:

  • used practical exercises to develop acting, singing and dancing skills
  • explored creative methods of interpreting musical theatre material
  • worked with contrasting music across various styles to respond to a stimulus
  • developed a devised performance using personal creative ideas
