Ronald Stevenson b. 1928

Ronald Stevenson, composer/pianist, was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1928. Of Scots and Welsh descent, he has lived in Scotland since 1952. He studied piano with the Blumenfeld pupil Iso Elinson in Manchester, and composition and orchestration with the Busoni student Guido Guerrini in Rome. He has performed on five continents. He is an honorary professor of the Shanghai Conservatory, and a visiting artist at Juilliard. In the 1980s, he made repeated visits as composer in residence to the Universities of Melbourne and Perth, Australia. He holds honorary doctorates of the Scottish Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee and Stirling. The Ronald Stevenson Society of Edinburgh, Scotland, is devoted to the promotion of his music, including the publication of scores; a Newsletter is issued three times per year. His compositions and pianism are recorded on the Altarus and Olympia labels.
Stevenson’s works include two piano concertos, a concerto for violin and another for cello, a large body of piano music, and around three hundred songs. His epic choral and orchestral work, Ben Dorain, recently completed, is due to receive its first performance in Glasgow (Celtic Connections) in January, 2008.
