American clarinettist Jean Johnson enjoys a varied musical career that includes orchestral, chamber, and solo performances. Ms. Johnson began her career in Asia, playing 1st Clarinet with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Since moving to Britain she performs regularly with major British orchestras and as a guest Principal has worked with the Bergen Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBCSSO, Camerata Ireland, and the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Jean is a keen chamber musician and has performed with Scottish groups such as the Hebrides Ensemble, Paragon Ensemble, McFall’s Chamber Orchestra, and has performed in various chamber combinations around the world at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall, Spannungen Kammermusikfest Germany, BOZAR Festival at the Palais des Beaux-Arts Brussels, Schwetzingen Festival, Lake District Summer Music Festival, Sound Music Festival, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, St. Magnus Festival, West End Festival, and has toured the UK performing recitals with pianist Steven Osborne. Jean is a member of the critically acclaimed chamber group, Daniel's Beard, as well as a founding member of TrioSono.
Ms. Johnson has been a soloist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra performing Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and with the Wuhan Symphony Orchestra performing Weber's Concerto No. 2. In Scotland, she has performed clarinet concertos by John McLeod and Steve King.
Ms. Johnson received performance and music education degrees on full scholarship from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as a student of Michael Sussman. She was then accepted to Indiana University for graduate school where she was an Associate Instructor in Clarinet while studying with Eli Eban and Alfred Prinz. She studied with Theodore Oien while a Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival.
