Stephen Doughty

After spending two years at the then Napier College, Edinburgh Stephen Doughty was awarded an Academic Scholarship to study for a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1992. Further study the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow resulted in the award of a Master of Music degree as a Répétiteur in 1997. Stephen is also an Associate of the Royal College of Organists and an Examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Stephen is well known in central Scotland as an accompanist, organist and conductor.

Stephen studied both choral and orchestral conducting at the Dartington and Canford International Summer Schools and was the joint holder of the first Sir Alexander Gibson Memorial Scholarship in Choral Conducting with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Chorus. He has conducted a wide range of choral music from folk song to large scale works, including Elijah, Carmina Burana, and Verdi’s Requiem. He is Musical Director of the East Lothian based Garleton Singers, who recently undertook a concert tour of the Rhine Valley, and of the St. Andrew’s Chorus in Fife.

Stephen is well known in central Scotland as an accompanist, organist and conductor. As an accompanist he works regularly with professionals and students of all standards for a wide range of concerts and examinations. He has given concerts in Dublin, Paris and Northern Ireland, as accompanist to the Ulster Youth Choir, and he accompanied the National Youth Choir of Scotland in their tour of Sweden in 2001.

As a player of harpsichord and organ continuo, he plays with all the professional Scottish orchestras as well as local ensembles; recent concerts have included Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.5 and Leon Coates’ Concertino for Harpsichord and Strings.

Having previously held the posts of organist and choirmaster in Fairmilehead Parish Church in Edinburgh, St Mary's Parish Church in Haddington, and St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Edinburgh, Stephen was appointed Director of Music of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Edinburgh in 2001.
