Little is known about the life of Robert Carver, whose work represents one of the finest examples of unaccompanied choral music of Renaissance Europe. His music survives in a manuscript in the National Library of Scotland and consists of five masses (including the Missa `Dum sacrum mytserium' for ten voices, and the Missa `L'Homme armZ for four voices) and two motets: Gaude flore virginali (for five voices) and O Bone Jesu (for 19 voices). His complete works have been recorded by Cappella Nova, and a definitive performing edition is now available from Glasgow University music department.
