Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie 1847 - 1935
Artists | Classical | Composers and Arrangers
Born Edinburgh. At the age of ten he went to Germany to study music, returning to London in 1862 to enter the Royal Academy of Music. His orchestral works of the 1870s were performed in Germany and Scotland, including his Rhapsodie Ecossaise (1880). A spell in Italy followed: a productive period which saw his opera Columba (1883) and the oratorio The Rose of Sharon (1884), one of his greatest successes. From the mid-1880s he was based in London once more, much of it as Principal of the Royal Academy of Music (1888-1924). During this time he wrote his Pibroch (1889) for violin and orchestra (written for Sarasate), and the Scottish Concerto (1897) for piano and orchestra and made famous by Paderewski.
