William Sweeney b. 1950

Born Glasgow, studied music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (with W T Clucas and Frank Spedding) and Royal Academy of Music (with Alan Hacker and Harrison Birtwistle). Written many works for his own instrument, the clarinet, but output (much of it influenced by traditional gaelic music and jazz) covers wide range of instrumental, orchestral and vocal forces. Commissions include BBC, Glasgow University, Mayfest, Cappella Nova. Among his recent major works was An Turus: a Gaelic opera with libretto by Aonghas MacNeacaill, premiered and toured by Paragon Ensemble in January 1998
