Born in Dundee. Studied English and Philosophy at St. Andrews University, and with Manuel Frankell and John Gardner at the Royal Academy of Music, London where he was awarded several major composition prizes, and joined the music staff of the BBC in Edinburgh in 1962, where he worked until 1991.
Works include a one-act opera, Tonight, Mrs Morrison, two symphonies, four string quartets, concertos, songs, and choral and instrumental compositions, as well as music for theatre, radio, film and television. His Symphony No 2, commissioned by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, received its premiere during the 1996/97 season. His recent work includes a concerto for E flat tenor Horn, Joining the Dancers, The Long, the Short and the Tall for a CD of recorder music played by John Turner, and King Midas has Donkey\'s Ears, a tale in music with story-teller, for young children.
