Programme Note

This piece was written in response to a poem which ALison Low wrote as a programme note for my solo trumpet piece 'Fireworks in Steel' when she gave a performance of it. 'Threnody: the warm sap seeps ...' is a quiet lyrical piece which takes its cue from the opening verse of Alison's poem.

A threnody to the green fields and the rusty earth;
to the young soul stripped from the stalk of life;
the warm sap seeps, mingled with tears;
the thrips swarm.

The piercing battery of heightened conflict;
the insistent screaming determination ricochets metal on metal.

The atrophied soul laments its eventual destiny.
