Programme Note

'rain dance' was written at the request of the pianist Ananda Sukarlan. The piece was created in Edinburgh, during a particularly wet summer. From the desk where I work, looking out of the window in to my garden, it was raining when I had the initial ideas for the piece - that of a lively dance. The next day it rained some more. In the following few days it rained on each and every day. The days turned into weeks - each and every day it rained. Just for good measure, once the piece was completed, it kept raining. Not just ordinary rain, but torrential, tropical-like downpours. Most unusual for the temperate Edinburgh.

Under the circumstances, it wasn't difficult to find a title for the piece and I think the title reflects the content of the music.

I am grateful to Ananda Sukarlan and Angel Luis Castano for their considerable help in revising this piece.
